TAUM History: 1986 to Present

Troy Area United Ministries was organized in 1986 as a consolidation of the United Urban Ministry of Troy and Troy Area Council of Churches which joined together to work for  "a more abundant life for the people of the area."

The Rev. Seymour Flinn, the Rev. Don Pangburn and others had the vision to combine the social and pastoral ministries of the original organizations into one association.

The growth of T.A.U.M. includes: expanding a local hunger walk to the international CWS/CROP Walk, with capital district coordination; forming a Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee to include race and community relations, scholarships for youth, forums and dialogues; meeting dire needs of the poor in Rensselaer County by creating the Furniture Program, and welcoming the Damien Center of Troy.

Here, people of spirit, justice and care work together to build the spiritual and social well being of people in the Troy Area.  Over 600 volunteers serve in a year's time. Our very active Board of Directors represents local congregations and the community at large. Over 40 congregations, six denominations, and many individuals contribute. Annual budgets increased from $68,000 in 1986 to nearly $250,000 in 2001.

Funded with foresight and generosity by The Howard and Bush Foundation, and with the capable leadership of Consultant Fred L Shilling, T.A.U.M. moved through a strategic and financial planning process in 1995. The year 2000 was significant in that Executive Director Margaret Stoner retired after twelve years of dedicated and outstanding service. In October, the Rev. Donna Elia was called to the position. Also, the Community Dispute Settlement became a separate entity now called Mediation Matters.

T.A.U.M. is placing energy and priority on expanded employment opportunities in the Furniture Program for at-risk persons, youth ministry, community-wide study circles on racism, empowering people living with HIV/AIDS. We covenant with congregations, our non-profit partners, and the community, to
continue putting our faith in action on behalf of the Troy area. Thank you for your continued support.
